Lutein is an antioxidant carotenoid a pigmented nutrient that is responsible for the yellow colors of fruits and vegetables and is present in the highest quantities in dark, leafy green vegetables. You're born with a certain amount of lutein in your eye, but your body doesn't reproduce it.

Why is lutein important to my sight?

The macula is the region of the retina responsible for central vision. It's also the area that is most sensitive to blue light, the part of the visible light spectrum that, along with ultraviolet light, can damage your eyes. Lutein helps protect against this damage by filtering blue light before it can damage the macula.* If sunglasses are the first line of defense against blue light, lutein is the last.
 

How much lutein do I need?

Without adequate consumption, the amount of lutein in the eye may deplete with age. Leading doctors recommend you get at least 6 mg of lutein per day to help maintain proper eye health. Since your body doesn't make lutein, you must constantly replace it through the foods you eat. Dark, leafy green vegetables like spinach or kale are especially good sources. But you'd have to eat over 2 bowls of raw spinach every day to get the recommended daily dose of 6 mg of lutein. Taking a multivitamin may help, but many multivitamins contain only a fraction of the recommended 6 mg of lutein. In fact, the leading multivitamin contains just .25 mg of lutein − a mere 4% of the recommended amount.

Have you ever wondered what those floating, amoeba-shaped things you can see floating around your eyes when looking at a bright light? When I was a kid these little squiggly moving things in my eyes used to fascinate me. My childhood imagination used to convince me that I could control them. But I couldn’t. I was definitely a strange kid with a vivid imagination. And I’m sure I’m not the only one who did this..
From time to time, it still happens even in my adult life, so here’s a fascinating TED-education video that explains exactly what this visual phenomena is that’s known as “floaters”. What is MPL?

The Medennium Phakic Refrective Lenses (MPL) are precision made optical devices, available in different model/size for intraocular implantation. The optical portion is biconcave or concave-convex and made from sillicon elastomer. The haptics are spherical  and flexible for ease of insertion, and the overall lens shape is designed to conform to the natural shape of the posterior chamber of the human ryr, and to move with the dynamic changes of the eye. Gross centration, if necessary, is achieved via haptic contact with the ciliary sulcus with precise centration achieved through the iris self-centering design. The MPL is not fixed to the ciliary sulcus but is allowed by designed to floating in its self- centered position.

LASIK vs Relex Smile

“Clear sight” a blessing some of us are deprived of. The routine dependence on contacts or glasses can be sickening, particularly if it hampers outdoor activities like sports and adventure. To help people with imperfect vision, there have been various scientific advents. LASIK (Laser in-situ keratomileusis) is the oldest, while ReLex SMILE (Refractive Lenticule Extraction & Small incision lenticule extraction) is one of the latest.
LASIK is the laser refractive procedure which may has advantages like postoperative improvement and stabilization of visual acuity, but has its own share of drawbacks.
LASIK is not just painful but some of the patients may also suffer from side effects such as dry eyes, reduced vision in low lighting conditions. Visual distortions such as glare and haloes can still occur, while flap-related complications, inflammation, or infection in few if not many cases have been found to have serious consequences.
There exist better options
The ‘blade-free’ version of LASIK that uses femtosecond lasers has been a one of the major advancements in the recent times. But ReLex SMILE could be described as more advanced and much better technology. This has been available for some time now and has provided some of the most encouraging results which might not have been possible with basic LASIK. Introduced as a single laser refractive procedure without the use of a laser, ReLex SMILE is a single-step, single instrument operation. ReLex SMILE uses tissue removal instead of tissue ablation and it achieves a high precision of cutting. This contributes to the predictability of the procedure.
ReLex SMILE is an advanced technology which provides potentially a more accurate ablation. This is because it does not requires a retractable flap, thus reducing the surgical time. It also reduces the patient’s inconvenience of moving from one laser to another, as required in LASIK. Moreover, initial clinical results have also been promising, which found that postoperative refractive outcomes after ReLex SMILE were much better. Also the safety and efficacy of ReLex SMILE have been confirmed by various reach studies.

How is Relex SMILE better than LASIK?
ReLex SMILE is a novel form of ‘flapless’ corneal refractive surgery and is one of the most modern technologies available today. It uses only one femtosecond laser to complete the refractive surgery, potentially reducing surgical time and side effects. This technology could potentially and completely replace LASIK in the future. Presbyopia eye surgery

1. What convinced you to go through the surgery? And what made you to choose This Clinic?

I came originally to have touch up LASIK. The original treatment 13 years ago was no longer adequate. I was told by Dr. Kim that although it could be done,because of my age (59) it was unlikely to last more than a few years. He then recommend lens replacement with specially designed corrective lenses that would free me from glasses of all types for the rest of my life.

 2. Tell us about what has changed since you had your surgery. What are the major changes comparing your life before and after the surgery?

Immediately after the surgery that nighttime halos were pronounced and although very pretty were a bit distracting. I now hardly see them (brain compensation) and find my vision to be spectacular. Good wt both 12 inches for reading and distance up to 1000 feet. Fantastic!

3. Were there any inconveniences during the recovery process? And tell us about how satisfied you are with your newly improved vision.

No issues other than the normal discomfort. In the u.s. You cannot have two,eyes done on the same day due to tiny risk of contaminated facility causing infection in both eyes. Although not mentioned at the time, it seems a real possibility, although extremely rare. Since JOEUNNUN s such a clean , immaculate facility, I had no concerns.

4. What were the most valuable and rememberable experiences at Joeunnun Eye Clinic?

 Friendly relaxed staff, professional nature of all, particularly Dr. Kim. Feeling the new lens slip into place was scary but incredible. In a matter of moments I could see!

5. Finally, what else do you want to tell us (our medical staffs, doctors, and nurses)? (Anything is OK including some of your wishes that may inform us to improve ourselves.)

 When I returned after two months I would have preferred to be seen by dr. Kim to determine if I need the minor follow up laser treatment, I'm still not clear that I do need it but have been given conflicting opinions at JOEUNNUN and a doctor in my home area in Virginia, USA. 

Overall,,very happy. The pricing was fair and reasonable and I would recommend it to my friends.

LASEK surgery

My name is Anita Michel and when I first came to Joeunnun Clinic I didn't realize how bad my eye-sight was. Practically being blind at -7, I was told that I'd have to do Lasek surgery which is the painful one and takes longer to regenerate after the surgery. The doctor did say that lately machines have been improved and it shouldn't hurt as much. Well, I guess I was lucky and it didn't hurt as much as I was expecting. I kept my eyes in dim light for 3 days after the surgery and had light headaches and burning in my eye, but overall it wasn't as bad. First few weeks I couldn't well very far or too close. But at my first check up after a month, I could see the smallest numbers on the eye-checking board and was more than happy with sich results. Having the hastle of dry eyes and wearing contacts and glasses makes anyone's life uncomfortable. But now thanks to the eye-surgery at Joeunnun clinic and their friendly personnel, that does speak English thank goodness,  I don't have to worry about not seeing well at night or playing sports freely. 감사합니다 ♡

Presbyopic Implantable Contact Lenses (IPCL)

 

Implantable contact lens surgery has been available for some time already to correct myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism and make patients independent of spectacles for distance vision.
Now available is an IPCL that can not only correct your myopia or hyperopia, but also presbyopia. Presbyopia is the normal age-related change in the eye that makes reading fine print difficult, and starts from the age of 45 onwards. Protecting Your Eyes from Solar Radiation

The sun supports all life on our planet, but its life-giving rays also pose dangers.

The sun’s primary danger is in the form of Ultraviolet (UV) radiation. UV radiation is a component of solar radiation, but it can also be given off by artificial sources like welding machines, tanning beds and lasers.
Most are aware of the harm UV radiation can do to the skin, but many may not realize that exposure to UV radiation can harm the eyes or that other components of solar radiation can also affect vision.
There are three types of UV radiation: UV-C is absorbed by the ozone layer and does not present any threat; UV-A and UV-B radiation can have adverse long- and short-term effects on the eyes and vision.
If your eyes are exposed to excessive amounts of UV radiation over a short period of time, you are likely to experience an effect called photokeratitis.

Like a “sunburn of the eye”, photokeratitis may be painful and include symptoms such as red eyes, a foreign body sensation or gritty feeling in the eyes, extreme sensitivity to light and excessive tearing. Fortunately, this is usually temporary and rarely causes permanent damage to the eyes.
Long-term exposure to UV radiation, however, can be more serious. Scientific studies and research have shown that exposure to small amounts of UV radiation over a period of many years increases the chance of developing a cataract and may cause damage to the retina, a nerve-rich lining of the eye that is used for seeing. Additionally, chronic exposure to shorter wavelength visible light (i.e. blue and violet light) may also be harmful to the retina.
The longer the eyes are exposed to solar radiation, the greater the risk of developing later in life such conditions as cataracts or macular degeneration. Since it is not clear how much exposure to solar radiation will cause damage, the AOA recommends wearing quality sunglasses that offer UV protection and wearing a hat or cap with a wide brim whenever you spend time outdoors. Also, certain contact lenses can provide additional UV protection.
To provide adequate protection for your eyes, sunglasses should:

• block out 99 to 100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B radiation;
• screen out 75 to 90 percent of visible light;
• be perfectly matched in color and free of distortion and imperfection; and
• have lenses that are gray for proper color recognition.

The lenses in sunglasses should be made from polycarbonate or Trivex® material if you participate in potentially eye-hazardous work or sports. These lenses provide the most impact resistance.
If you spend a lot of time outdoors in bright sunlight, wrap around frames can provide additional protection from the harmful solar radiation.
Don’t forget protection for children and teenagers. They typically spend more time in the sun than adults.
Be sure to see your doctor of optometry at least every two years [recommended schedule of examinations] for a comprehensive eye examination. It is a good way to monitor your eye health, maintain good vision and keep track of your solar radiation protection needs as well as new advances in eye protection.

 I had worked in Korea and knew people who had used Korean surgery before so felt confident with this. I looked on-line and read the different recommendations and also noted that a group, I belong to, mentioned your clinic  in their newsletter.
2. Tell us about what has changed since you had your surgery. What are the major changes, comparing your life before and now after, the surgery?

The major changes include being able to work better at my teaching job because I have clearer eyesight. I love being able to watch a show and see it all so clearly, (but, I don't like the fact that i can see all the lines on my face which were not so obvious to me before. I am really  so pleased to have done this surgery.

3. Were there any inconveniences during the recovery process? Tell us about how satisfied you are with your newly improved vision.

Any inconveniences were so minor, like wearing an eye patch for 4 hours, or remembering to use the eye drops, that they are not really worth mentioning. It was all worth it. I am more than satisfied with my new eyes.   

4. What were the most valuable and memorable experiences at Joeunnun Eye Clinic?

The staff were all so very helpful and understanding. English was not a problem as Moon Joo and others had enough English to understand my needs (thank you). The surgeon was considerate and careful and explained the procedure, so i was not afraid.    

5. Finally, what else do you want to tell us (our medical staff, doctors, and nurses)? Anything is OK, including some of your ideas that may help  us to improve ourselves.

  You all did a very good job. The only suggestion I have is better instructions for finding your clinic. Your map is not clear to us foreigners and even when we asked some Chinese people to help they could not. I would suggest you draw a new map and add the MacDonald's location to it.  Also include that it is within 15 steps of exit 12 or something along these lines.

Thank you to the staff, including nurses, doctors and reception. You all helped make this a comfortable experience and I have recommended your clinic to friends.

 I was mildly off put by the giggles from surgical support staff who fumbled and dropped equipment and were seemingly inept at adminstering analygisic eye drops before the surgery. The surgery was comfortable even though I was a bit worried about my eyes However considering that lasers were cutting holes through my eyeballs It was surprisingly minor procedure.All in all regarding the surgery, It was quick, relatively painless and the doctor seemed competent.I would have consider this a fantastic procesure,  However unfortunately as the anesthesis were off the pain became so excruciating that my eye muscles bagan to spasm continuely. I was concerned that this contractions may have affected the healing prrocess and the outcome of the surgery.

what irks me is that the simple prescription of the anelgesic eyedrops, or a single dose of a muscle relaxent, or an opite would have mitigated the contractions releaved the pain and allow the patient to sleep through the healing process.
 Now after 1 month, My eyes are getting better and I am very happy with the result that I could see better without glasses,  Thank you for the help and wish to be your business goes well.

  * Like what I said. I think because every person has different level of pain nervs, It would help the patients more if they would have proper medicines for after surgery.

What is Laser Blended Vision (LBV)?

Blended Vision is an advanced method for treating patients with presbyopia. It offers the opportunity to achieve freedom from glasses by combining the simplicity and accuracy of corneal refractive surgery with the benefits of increased depth of field in retaining visual quality. As a surgical solution based on the naturally occurring spherical aberrations of the eye, blended vision extends the scope of customized ablation beyond the limits of conventional monovision laser methods in several ways.

How is it achieved?

Similar to conventional monovision, the dominant eye is corrected for distance vision, whereas the non-dominant eye is corrected to be slightly myopic for near vision. This micro-monovision strategy is further enhanced by a decisive difference: an increase in the depth of field of each eye using a wavefront-optimized ablation profile to create a continuous refractive power gradient for the whole optical zone of the cornea. Blended vision is an individualized treatment plan based on preoperative spherical aberrations and the functional age of the eye. As a result, a customized fusion of the two images for near and distance vision is created for each patient – the so-called “Blend Zone”.

Presbyopia with LASIK

Correction of Presbyopia using Laser Blended Vision(LBV)

After the age of forty, it becomes harder to read up close. and reading glasses often become necessary. Now there is a method of correcting this problem using the Mel90 from Carl Zeiss-Meditec:: Laser Blended Vision(LBV). It uses the principle of monovision, in a better and more efficient way.

 

Mr.Jose Lora visited us on 29th August. Hi came frome US and visitied Korea for business trip.

His eyes were  -2.25 -2.25*168/ -1.75-3.75*28. Ths status is  mild near sightness and  high dgree of astigmatism. And His eyes had Presbyopia so he was wearing a prograssive glasses.
