LASIK eye surgery safe in long-term, experts say

Refer to below article from FOX NEWS concerning the lasik surgery.

<LASIK eye surgery safe in long-term, experts say>

LASIK eye surgery to correct a person’s vision has been in use since the mid-1990s, but lingering questions as to the l...ong-term effects still come to mind for past and potential patients. But LASIK recipients can rest easy: Studies have shown that the surgeries have little negative effect and in fact, are now safer and more beneficial than ever.

“LASIK is an FDA-approved procedure… if there were long-term issues with the procedure, the FDA would pull the procedure off the market, right? And that is absolutely not the case,” Dr. Marc Werner, an ophthalmologist at the Stahl Eye Center in New York City, told FoxNews.com. “We still have lots of people we started on 18 to 19 years ago who are perfect. It’s still a very good procedures with long-term results.”

In a 2008 retrospective study of LASIK procedures, Spanish researchers followed up with 70 patients for 10 years and found that, overall, participants had healthy corneas and that their vision remained accurate.

“The question is: Has the technology improved over the last 18 years? Absolutely. It’s a safer procedure with better results,” Werner said.

LASIK, laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a surgical procedure that utilizes a laser to permanently change the shape of the cornea to correct vision. Nearsightedness and farsightedness are both caused by distortions in the cornea.

During the procedure, a flap is created in the cornea so that a computer-controlled excimer laser can vaporize a portion of the stroma, which is located in the middle of the cornea. The flap is then closed again, correcting the curvature of the cornea, and improving vision.

In the mid-1990s, surgeons used a surgical blade to create a flap in the cornea. But now, the majority of ophthalmic surgeons use a femtosecond laser. The laser separates tissues by creating a layer of bubbles, then making an incision to create the flap. If the surgery is disrupted, the air bubbles dissolve and no tissue is removed, unlike with a blade.

In addition to improvements in the procedure, the preoperative testing process has become more thorough, with screening tests monitoring multiple elements of the cornea to ensure LASIK is proper for the patient. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), people who have experienced vision changes in the past year, have a disease or disorder that may affect wound healing, or actively participating in contact sports may be at risk for complications from LASIK. The procedure is approved for adults for adults age 18 and over.

“The screening process has gotten better in the sense that it could pick up things it couldn’t pick up…10…five years ago,” Dr. Michael Ehrenhaus, director of New York Cornea Consultants and director of Cornea External Disease & Refractive Surgery at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, told FoxNews.com

Ehrenhaus points out that there are fewer long-term studies now as there were at the advent of the surgery because of the proven safety and effectiveness of the procedure.

With the natural aging process, it’s possible a patient will need a touch-up LASIK procedure to fine tune his or her vision in the future, or may need reading glasses later in the life.

“Aging changes occurs within 100 percent of the population,” Dr. Kerry Solomon, director of the Carolina Eyecare Research Institute in Charleston, SC, told FoxNews.com. “…Occasionally things will change in [eye] shape and size.”

Those eye changes also include cataracts, the clouding of the natural lens of the eye. LASIK does not increase the incidence of cataracts – the surgery affects only the cornea, not the lens of the eye.

“With or without LASIK, we all develop [cataracts]… and their occurrence is unrelated to LASIK,” Werner said.

Long-term safety of LASIK has been good and continues to improve with technological developments.

“Most patients do phenomenally well in the long-term. 15 to 20 years after, patients come up and say, ‘This is the best thing I ever did,’” Ehrenhaus said. “If it wasn’t a good procedure, it wouldn’t still be done.”

Shelley from USA, "All Laser LASEK"

Shelley from USA, she got All laser LASEK surgery at Kangnam Joeunnun International Eye Center. One day, I got an call from Hamyang where she is living and it is far from Seoul. She was searching a good eye hospital in Seoul to get a especially Lasek surgery. So I gave her general info about lasik and lasek surgery as I am doing normally including our websites which she could check all process of the surgery.

When she has decided to have the lasek surgery at our hsopital she called me to make an appointment for the eye exam and the surgery as well. We conducted her eye exam to make sure if she is a right candidate for laser surgery on her eyes since some people can not do laser eye surgery in some cases;having Avelino DNA, too thin cornea thickness or too sharpen cornea and such.

Fortunately, she had a good eye condition so she could pick one between lasik and lasek surgery. She finally decided to have All laser lasek surgery to fix her refractive error. This below pictures were after the surgery and eye check up when she visited our hospital last time.

When she visited the hospital last time on Oct. 10, 2014 to check her eye condition, healing process, she was told from the doctor that finally she got 20/20. Also she seemed she could see much better clearly than before and enjoy her new vision without wearing glasses although she is still wearing the lensless glasses in her classes as her students told her that she looks better when wearing glasses haha. I think she looks better without the glasses :) Anyway, I am really glad to hear that you are really enjoying your life without inconvenience to see this wonderful world.

Joshua from USA, Z2 LASIK at Kangnam Joeunnun International Eye Center in seoul, Korea

Joshua from USA, he had LASIK surgery at Kangnam Joeunnun International Eye Center on July 11, 2014. He is an english teacher at Jeongcheol English Institute in Seoul, but he is leaving for America in a month. He wanted to have a laser eye surgery to fix his myopia before he leave Korea as he knew that the laser surgery in Korea has been well known and not that expensive as compared to the laser surgery in USA. He came to our hospital last week to check his eyes. It was one week after the LASIK surgery. As we expected, his vision was great and clear. Although he told me he has light spread at night, but that is just normal process after the laser surgery. He will feel better with his vision even at night in several months.

Here are some pictures of him while he stayed at the hospital for the eye exam and LASIK surgery.

< Detailed Eye Exam for Lasik and Lasek >
It is not difficult and there is no pain for the detailed eye exam, and it is the most important process before the doctor decide if you are a right candidate for laser eye surgery.

1. This is a test for myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. You can just put your chin and forehead to the equipment and if you look straight in there then you will find a balloon. Keep looking at the balloon then our specialist will check your vision. (Free Eye Test for Lasik and Lasek)

2. Intraocular pressure test. If you look in the equipment then you will find green light. You need to keep looking at the light. And please do not be surprised by air shots :) (Free Eye Test for Lasik and Lasek)

3. Corneal Topographic map test. We can check the shape and size of your cornea  which is most important factors for laser eye surgery. You do not need to be afraid of the equipment approaching your eyes just look at the greenlight in front of you. (Free Eye Test for Lasik and Lasek)

4.  This is the test for retina and optic nerve. While doing this test, do not be surprised by flash light, and keep watching green light(yellowish green). (Free Eye Test for Lasik and Lasek)

 5. This is the CT(Computed Tomography) exam of your cornea. If you look in the equipment through the long rectangular shape hole then you will find a black dot. And keep your eyes opened for three second. The specialist will sign you at the moment. (Free Eye Test for Lasik and Lasek)

6. Vision Test. (Free Eye Test for Lasik and Lasek)

7. This is the CT(Computed Tomography) for your retina. Put your chin and forehead to the equipment then look straight and when you find a yellow light, keep looking at the light. (Free Eye Test for Lasik and Lasek)

8. Ultrasound, Ultrasonography, for your cornea thickness. The specialist will put numbing drops into your eyes, and he will touch the surface of your cornea with an equipment, looks like a blunt point pencil, to check the cornea thickness. (Free Eye Test for Lasik and Lasek)

9. Lastly, the specialist will check the eye dryness by checking the tear amout. He will put a peice of short and thin paper into your eyes then you will close your eyes for a minute. (Free Eye Test for Lasik and Lasek)

<Z2 LASIK Surgery>

His eye conditions were good to go for both LASIK and LASEK. So after all the explanation for both surgery he finally decided to have Z2 LASIK surgery. Z2 LASIK surgery is to use Crystal line laser as a femtosecond laser which use to make the cornea flap and Amaris 750s laser as a Excimer laser which can actually fix the refractive errors such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. The SCHWIND Amaris 750s laser has been well known in highest speed with extremely high precision.

 1. Free consultation, after the eye exam he had time to hear his eye condition and the options he could choose to fix his myopia based on the result of the eye exam, after all he chose Z2 LASIK surgery.

2. In the surgery waiting room, the doctor kindly explained what he should do while the LASIK surgery when he laid down on the bed.

 3. A cute nurse took his blood :) to make a special eye drop, PRP(platelet-rich plasma), which can help the healing process after the surgery.

 4. He was waiting for the Z2 LASIK surgery wearing a disinfected overgarment.

 5. In the surgery room.

 6. After the surgery, he took a rest for a while at the recovery room.

 7. The surgeon checked his eyes after the Z2 LASIK surgery.

 8. Every things were good, and the LASIK surgery was successful!

<Check up on the day after the LASIK surgery>

He came to the hospital to check his eye condition and his vision on the day after the Z2 LASIK surgery. Every thing was going well, and his vision will get better and better!!
